Auto Maintenance Schedule, Why You Should Follow It! Auto Maintenance Schedule, Why You Should Follow It!

Auto Maintenance is the#1 reason for most car repairs

If you want to enjoy the services of your new car for a long time, you need to be strict in following its regular maintenance schedule. This schedule was developed by the car manufacturer to prevent any serious damage to your car in the course of its daily operations.

Cars Need Constant Attention

It’s not a situation where you buy a car, drive it every day, and just leave it there on the garage until you are ready to drive it again. If this is what you are doing, you need to change your approach. If you don’t, pretty soon, you will need to visit a car repair shop for major repairs.

Protect Your Car and Profit from It

Aside from ensuring that your car operates optimally each day, regular car maintenance will ensure its good resale value. When it has lost its novelty, you can resell it at a handsome amount which you can use for buying the latest car model you want.

No matter what kind of maintenance you do, your car will still depreciate. So, to mitigate that depreciation, give it regular maintenance service. Or you can have your car regularly maintained by a car repair shop that provides excellent services such as a Jiffy Lube oil change.

Auto Maintenance Services That You Can Do

Actually, you really don’t have to depend on a car service shop to do your regular auto maintenance. There are things that you can do yourself that will ensure the excellent performance of whatever car you are driving. Here are some of the most important ones.

1. Changing the oil and the oil filter

This is one of the usual and the easiest car maintenance you can perform, although you might get dirtied in the process. You only need a set of simple tools like a wrench and pliers. But this job is very important for the longevity of your car engine.

2. Maintenance of the ignition system

The car’s ignition system includes the spark plug. In older cars, it includes cleaning or replacement of the spark plugs, rotor, distributor cap and spark plug wires. In newer models, this work will only take about 10 to 20 minutes. You will also need a ratchet and a spark plug wrench.

3. Maintenance of the cooling system

Late car models require replacement of the coolant for every 100,000 to 200,000 miles. You can easily do this by using distilled water combined with a concentrated coolant. This will prevent mineral blockage and corrosion. Bleed the system after you have replaced the coolant to ensure that no air bubbles are left inside.

4. Replacement of the air filter

The car’s air filter ensures that no impurities enter the car engine. As such it will be clogged after some time of operation. You need to clean this filter, and if it is already too old and damaged, replace it with a new one. The only tool you will need is a screwdriver. By doing this regularly, you can improve your car’s mpg and power.

5. Replacing the brake pads and rotor

The brakes pads and rotors are the usual wear items on a car. It is therefore important to check them regularly and replace them if need be. You can do this repair service at home with just a few tools. But remember to change the brake fluid and bleed the air each time you replace brake pads.

6. Checking tire pressure

This is probably the easiest maintenance job you can do for your car. Checking the tire pressure for proper inflation is vital to the car’s safety operation. You can purchase a tire pressure gauge, or go to a service station and have the attendant check your tires.

7. Rotating your tires

Tire rotation is necessary for prolonging the life of your tires. By rotating heavily worn tires with the less worn, you can equalize their rate of wear. You will need a jack, tire stands and a lug wrench. This will take a few minutes to complete.

8. Changing the transmission fluid

Your transmission gear uses transmission fluid which gets dirtied after long use. It smoothens your gear shifts and protects the metal from corrosion. Change it in regular intervals according to the car maker’s recommendation.

9. Regular car wash

Washing your car should be done regularly. This will ensure that your car will look good, and will also protect its surface coatings. You need to wash the car’s body and outer parts especially if you’ve driven it in muddy roads. Sludge and mud left on the surface will act as destructive elements that will ruin the car’s surfaces.

You also need to schedule a regular thorough car wash that includes the interior, the engine compartment under the hood as well as the under chassis as part of your auto maintenance. This service is better done at the service station.
