History

The company was founded in 1921 when four Navy buddies— Manny Rosenfield, Moe Strauss, W. Graham “Jack” Jackson, and Moe Radavitz—pooled together their money to opened Pep Auto Supply Company in Philadelphia. Little did they know that their venture would eventually become a multi-billion dollar company.

In 1930, Manny, Moe and Jack put up a separate corporation, “The Pep Boys—Manny, Moe & Jack of California.” The trio would then open two stores in Los Angeles three years later.

The next decade, the Pep Boys became a publicly listed firm on the American Stock Exchange. It would then move its headquarters in Philadelphia, PA. In the 50s, the company partnered with Diners Club for a customer charge program.

The two companies would eventually merge in the 60s when the Philadelphia-based The Pep Boys—Manny, Moe & Jack was consolidated with The Pep Boys of California.

The merger proved to be beneficial to the company as the firm’s sales topped the $100 million mark for the first time. It also introduced Auto Sense, one of the first diagnostic computer systems in the vehicle service industry. The company also started to automate its sales and inventory during the 70s.

In the 80s, the company moved to the New York Stock Exchange. It also became more popular with its television ads featuring Manny, Moe, and Jack as animated figures. The company then started to roll out name-brand tires.

The company’s growth continued in the following decade as its sales exceeded $1 billion for the first time. To reach out to its growing popularity in the Latin American market, it published bilingual catalogues. It also registered its official website, www.pepboys.com. It would close the decade by putting up a store in Puerto Rico, the 500th in the company’s history.
